Sarsaparilla root extract is derived from the sarsaparilla plant (Smilax china), which is made up of woody vines. The word sarsaparilla is a translation of the Spanish word zarzaparrilla, which means “brambly vine”. There are varieties of the sarsaparilla plant in most parts of the world now, but it was originally native to tropical climates in the Western Hemisphere. Sarsaparilla root was used to make sodas and root beers, but now it has mostly been replaced with artificial flavorings. The plant has been used for hundreds of years by native peoples for its purported health benefits.
