Vitamin E, also known as tocopheryl, is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant in the body. It was first discovered in 1922 by Herbert McLean Evans and Katherine Scott Bishop while conducting experiments with rats on a diet lacking in certain nutrients. They noticed that the rats developed reproductive problems and miscarriages, which were later reversed when their diet was supplemented with a new factor - vitamin E.
