What is Cayenne Extract?
Cayenne extract is derived from cayenne peppers, the fruit of the Capsicum annuum plant. Cayenne peppers are a member of the nightshade family of plants, which also includes jalapenos, bell peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant. Cayenne has been used for hundreds of years and was introduced to Europe by Christopher Columbus who first brought cayenne peppers back to Europe from the Americas in the late 15th century. The fruits were called peppers, because their spicy properties were reminiscent of the peppercorn.
